South Carolina lawmakers debated a bill that would require parental consent using a government-issued ID for minors to access social media.
Supporters said the measure would protect children’s mental health while critics worried it collects extra personal data — the Senate committee will review the proposal further.
A Senate subcommittee looked at a bill from Sen. Michael Johnson (from Tega Cay) that would let people bet on horse races using their phones and take 5% of wagers to help horse farms and tracks.
Lawmakers will meet again before a vote while supporters say it will help the horse industry and opponents worry it might increase gambling.
