CRIME NEWS

  • Three people aged 17 to 21 were charged on robbery and murder charges for the killing of Larisha Thompson on May 2 when she was shot during a robbery in Lancaster County—her family now demands answers as authorities will hold a news conference Monday morning.  WSOC-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • South Carolina ETV and Public Radio premiered the 30-minute documentary SC On Display: The Murals of Rock Hill on May 8th at 8 p.m., which explores the city's large-scale murals and their role in telling its history + it will have an encore on May 11th at 3:30 p.m. featuring interviews with local mural artists, the Rock Hill Arts Council, and residents.  WRHI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On May 8, the state legislature passed House Bill 3292 that lets local governments allow nighttime golf cart use on roads with 35 mph limits—vehicles must have working headlights and passengers under 12 must wear seatbelts. The bill now awaits Governor McMaster’s signature and will take effect immediately if approved.  WRHI
  • South Carolina’s House passed House Bill 4216 on May 7 to cut income tax brackets and lower rates—those earning up to $30,000 will pay 1.99% while higher incomes face 5.39%, with deductions still in place for Social Security and military retirees; the bill now moves to the Senate for review.  Here Rock Hill

HEALTH NEWS

  • Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill disputes a Leapfrog Group report that gave it a D rating and labeled it the worst hospital in the state—hospital officials say the report uses a flawed scoring system that deceptively rewards hospitals providing free data.  WSOC-TV
  • Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill is contesting its ‘D’ safety rating from The Leapfrog Group, the only hospital in South Carolina to receive that score.
