EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Today, the South Carolina Department of Education announced that Dr. Abbey Duggins will serve as Deputy Superintendent for College, Career, and Military Readiness and as Chief Academic Officer, effective June 17 — she brings over 25 years of educational experience including her role as Director of the Office of Early Learning and Literacy. - ➤ South Carolina launched a five-year pilot program letting public schools hire up to 10% non-certified teachers if candidates hold a degree and at least five years of work experience—non-certified hires must enroll in a state-approved certification course within three years. The state will track the pilot with annual reports starting in 2026 and complete a full evaluation by late 2029 to guide decisions beyond 2030. WRHI
- ➤ Rock Hill High School senior Michael Davis was awarded the 2025 SCAC Board of Directors Scholarship with a one-time $5,000 prize for his academic achievements and community involvement. - ➤ On May 27th, 2025, Rock Hill City Council held a special session to review the 2025/2026 fiscal year budget, approving a balanced $313 million plan that kept water and electric rates competitive while proposing a 3% sanitation rate and an 8% wastewater rate increase. The Council approved several annexations and ordinance readings but denied a petition to rezone 5.78 acres on Ebenezer Road—citing traffic and safety concerns. WRHI
