  • Animal rescue groups in South Carolina are facing a severe crisis as an increasing number of abandoned and abused cats have overwhelmed local shelters—Rock Hill’s Spooky Whiskers Feral Cat Rescue has spent nearly $20,000 treating injured animals like a kitten named Smokey found hurt near a highway. CRIME NEWS

  • Kevin Tolson, a 55-year-old former York County sheriff, was arrested on July 14 in Rock Hill after he left the scene of a crash on Airport Road when his vehicle struck a telephone pole and fence — he failed to report the incident and was released on a personal recognizance bond as the investigation continues.  Here Rock Hill

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Joel Hamilton is now the chair of the Winthrop University Board of Trustees following a rule that makes the vice-chair step in when the chair is permanently absent. He said he will work with board members (including former vice-chair Kathy Hudson Bigham) to guide the university forward while a new vice-chair is selected at the October 29-30 meeting.  WRHI
