CRIME NEWS

  • A weekend of violence in York County left two people dead when a 16-year-old student was fatally shot near Clover on July 26 and a 23-year-old man died at a Motel 6 parking lot near Lake Wylie — authorities arrested a 19-year-old suspect in connection with the first shooting.  Here Rock Hill
  • York County Coroner Sabrina Gast confirmed yesterday that 17-year-old Nathan Martinez was the homicide victim after a shooting on Paddlers Cove Drive, and York County deputies continue to investigate as 19-year-old Noah Walter faces charges for murder and weapon possession.  WCCB Charlotte

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Belinda Byers and her son celebrated college graduations after finishing degrees at Colorado Technical University through the McDonald’s Archways to Opportunity program — which provided tuition coverage and academic advising. After 46 years with the chain, Byers said she is grateful for the chance to return to school and follow her dream.  Queen City News
  • Forty-six students were honored Monday morning at Piedmont Medical Center after completing a six‐week Volunteen Program that provided hands‐on hospital experience and service of 48 to 65 hours.  WRHI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson joined a coalition of attorneys general from 27 states when a letter was signed on Monday July 28 urging the NCAA to reinstate records, titles, awards, and recognitions earned by female athletes in events that included biological males. The letter argued that past NCAA policies allowed unfair competition & denied deserving athletes their achievements, and it called for further action to restore fairness.  WRHI
  • U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman—one of the House’s most conservative members—announced his run for governor during a rally in his Rock Hill district on Sunday. He is running to replace term-limited Henry McMaster with a focus on term limits, road safety and placing state judges on the ballot and received an endorsement from former governor Nikki Haley while Mark Meadows spoke at the event.  Queen City News
