A weekend of violence in York County left two people dead when a 16-year-old student was fatally shot near Clover on July 26 and a 23-year-old man died at a Motel 6 parking lot near Lake Wylie — authorities arrested a 19-year-old suspect in connection with the first shooting.

York County Coroner Sabrina Gast confirmed yesterday that 17-year-old Nathan Martinez was the homicide victim after a shooting on Paddlers Cove Drive, and York County deputies continue to investigate as 19-year-old Noah Walter faces charges for murder and weapon possession.

Belinda Byers and her son celebrated college graduations after finishing degrees at Colorado Technical University through the McDonald’s Archways to Opportunity program — which provided tuition coverage and academic advising.

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson joined a coalition of attorneys general from 27 states when a letter was signed on Monday July 28 urging the NCAA to reinstate records, titles, awards, and recognitions earned by female athletes in events that included biological males.
