CRIME NEWS

  • York County woman Leigh Flynt Kohn, 43, was arrested on Sept. 5 for two counts of tax evasion and one count of failing to file state taxes after allegedly not reporting $281,000 in income from 2023 and 2024—she is held at York County Detention Center pending a bond hearing.  WRHI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor McMaster issued an executive order directing the Department of Social Services to seek a federal waiver that will restrict SNAP users from buying candy, energy drinks, soft drinks, and other sugary drinks—exempting items like protein bars, granola bars, and baking ingredients, with DSS required to apply within 14 days to promote healthier choices.  WRHI
  • Councilman Roddey withdrew his Rock Hill mayoral bid on Friday—he will continue serving on the York County Council.  WRHI

HEALTH NEWS

  • In August, the South Carolina Department of Agriculture inspected 235 restaurants in York County and found that most earned an A grade while seven received a B and three got a C for food safety issues—each later passed follow-up inspections with an A.  WRHI
  • Today the FDA withdrew its emergency use authorization for the COVID-19 vaccine, limiting use so only people aged 65 or older can be vaccinated without a prescription while younger individuals must meet extra conditions.   • South Pointe High School won 10 to 7 in overtime against West Charlotte today, with Lawson Miller kicking a 30 yard field goal and J’Zavien Currence returning an interception for 90 yard for the only touchdown.
