CRIME NEWS

  • South Pointe High School was placed in secure status today after a domestic incident involving a staff member—police increased their presence to ensure safety while doors remained locked until law enforcement concluded the situation.  Here Rock Hill

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Today, city officials rebranded the former Carolina Panthers practice facility as Palmetto Research Park—spanning over 200 acres with ready infrastructure and rail access. The project will bring high-wage jobs in life sciences, advanced manufacturing and aerospace while local schools help train a skilled workforce.  Here Rock Hill

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Flint Hill Elementary School opened today in Fort Mill to ease overcrowding by serving 800 students from three other schools in a facility that holds 1,200 students. The school was funded by an Impact Fee, but some parents worry about safety near the Silfab Solar plant—Citadel EHS will conduct an assessment—with a meeting scheduled on October 21 at Nation Ford High School.  Here Rock Hill

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Anne Springs Close Greenway in Fort Mill will receive 28 trees from PalmettoPride's state environmental grant program, which awarded 1,503 trees across 13 counties to boost public green spaces. Recipients will pick up the saplings on Oct. 16 at the South Carolina Department of Corrections Horticultural Facility—supporting efforts to restore canopy coverage after Hurricane Helene.  Queen City News

  • A traveler in Travelers Rest won $50,000 after buying a Powerball ticket at Ingles grocery store on Greer Highway during Wednesday night’s drawing. The ticket matched four white balls and the red Powerball number—Saturday’s jackpot is set to reach $195 million.  Queen City News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former Winthrop University General Counsel Christopher Hagins sued the board on September 7 in York County, saying that secret votes and hidden meetings broke South Carolina’s open meetings law—alleging 27 breaches of the FOIA and bylaw violations that hurt public spending and education. He seeks to cancel the board’s June elections and require new votes to restore transparency.  Here Rock Hill

  • Rock Hill — Winthrop University's Avery Jolley earned the Big South Player of the Week award after she led the team with 20 kills against Gardner-Webb, marking her third career honor and eight double-doubles this season.   • Today, the Winthrop University volleyball team will face High Point at 6:00 p.m. in Rock Hill as they aim to maintain their top spot in the Big South preseason rankings—historically holding a 39—31 record against their rivals.
