- ➤ The Catawba Cultural Center in Rock Hill received nearly $1 million in grants from casino revenue to preserve Catawba traditions and strengthen its operations + some staff worked without pay during tough periods. - ➤ Researchers from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln identified a new butterfly species, Celastrina iryna, named in honor of Iryna Zarutska who was murdered on the Charlotte light rail; specimens were collected in Aiken, Barnwell, Dorchester, Jasper and Orangeburg and the species flies primarily in April—researchers noted it is most similar to Celastrina neglecta but differs in its clear wing scale overlays. - ➤ South Carolina residents played lottery games on October 24 and set a Mega Millions jackpot of $318.2 million with winning numbers 11-18-31-51-56 — with a Mega Ball of 24, the largest prize remains unclaimed. - ➤ Piedmont Medical Center will open a 10,000 square foot emergency facility in Indian Land by spring 2026—built to give residents faster access to urgent care.
