COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bethel Shelters in Rock Hill reported a rise in shelter stays last year with day stays growing from 22,000 to 28,000 and night stays from 17,000 to 25,000 as more people needed help. Executive director Emily Sutton said high rent and lack of affordable housing drove the increase while the city council passed an ordinance to end indefinite hotel stays and the shelter joined local partners to support rapid rehousing programs.  The Post and Courier

  • A massive fire severely damaged a business building in South End over the weekend — records show the property had unresolved fire code violations from June 2024.  Queen City News

CRIME NEWS

  • Rock Hill resident Chris’tavious Caldwell was sentenced to 15 years in prison for his role in a shootout on April 26, 2022 that took three teenagers’ lives—he earned credit for 1,013 days in custody—and he turned on a friend during the deadly incident.  Here Rock Hill

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A York County parent filed a lawsuit against York Preparatory Academy in Rock Hill alleging racial discrimination against his sixth-grade son during the 2022-23 school year. The complaint, filed on February 27, claims that school officials ignored repeated racial slurs & physical threats that left his son ill and changed his personality.  WSOC-TV
  • York Technical College will host Tech Fest 2025 on March 29 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its Rock Hill campus (452 S Anderson Rd), where community members can enjoy free hands-on exhibits, live demonstrations, food trucks, and family activities to celebrate 60 years of innovation in education.  Here Rock Hill
