- ➤ A severe storm hit Rock Hill recently with winds reaching 90 mph and golf ball–sized hail that damaged hundreds of buildings—experts from the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety are testing stronger roofing materials to help protect homes in the future. - ➤ Two minor earthquakes occurred near the state line with the stronger 2.2 magnitude event detected on Thursday at about 2:34 p.m. near Jaars and 16 miles east-southeast of Rock Hill while a 1.71 quake happened on September 24—state officials confirmed these micro earthquakes are part of the 16 recorded this year and noted they rarely pose a threat to safety.
