Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 18th of June.
Good morning, Rock Hill.
💼 Business
The City of Rock Hill is working this week to keep electric rates affordable for residents.
Officials say the measures are planned to control energy costs + help keep household bills low.
🎭 Culture
Winthrop University announced that longtime dance faculty member Sandra Neels, who performed with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company and retired in May, passed away in early June.
Parker Funeral Home in Rock Hill is handling her arrangements—the Department of Theatre and Dance will honor her legacy at the Fall Dance Showcase in December.
📰 Economy
Duke Energy proposed a 12.1% electricity rate increase to fund infrastructure upgrades and a new natural gas plant that will add about $74.8 million in revenue and raise residential monthly bills by roughly $21.66—from $144.85 to $166.51—beginning February 1, 2026.
The company will also file to build a plant in Anderson County expected to produce roughly 1,400 megawatts of power to improve grid reliability amid recent severe weather.
🏛️ Government
South Carolina has enacted H.3049, which makes sharing intimate images without consent a felony — the law sets penalties including fines up to $5,000 and imprisonment for up to five years and also covers AI-created images.
Lawmakers plan a follow-up bill to allow victims to file lawsuits for further protection.
